A: My Spartan Story is brand new to students as of Fall 2020, and therefore a great place to start is by exploring our website. Next, login to the My Spartan Story platform and take a look around. Under “Spartan Experience Record” this area will display your experiences you have participated in that are either pending validation or are validated. If you are currently participating in an experience that you believe is a fit to be included on your SER and don’t see displayed in this section, the next step would be to suggest it to be added to My Spartan Story. Additionally, follow us on social media to stay up to date on programs, news, and resources.
Q: What is My Spartan Story and the Spartan Experience Record?
A: My Spartan Story is a platform where you can find, track, and reflect on your beyond-the-classroom engagement and learning in MSU activities you are currently or have previously participated in.
The Spartan Experience Record (SER) is where submitted experiences, once approved and validated in My Spartan Story, populate to formally recognize student learning in co-curricular experiences. The SER is a customizable document you can request alongside your transcript through the Registrar’s Office.
Q: What is the difference between an activity and a position?
A: It is important to know that activity and position interrelate to each other—both are important information in My Spartan Story. The activity is the program, RSO, or team that you are a part of. The position is the title or role you play within the activity. An example would be as follows: President (Position), Zeke Fan Club (Activity).
Q: What does “validated” mean?
A: “Validated” means that you 1) successfully participated in a co-curricular experience and 2), achieved the learning outcomes established for your experience. An experience MUST be validated by an MSU faculty/staff member for it to display on your Spartan Experience Record. Q: Do I have access to My Spartan Story after graduation?
A: Absolutely. You have direct access to the My Spartan Story platform 6 months after graduation, and you can request your Spartan Experience Record (SER) alongside your transcript indefinitely. Please review the Student Resources section to learn how to request your SER.
Q: How is My Spartan Story different from a resume?
A: My Spartan Story is a whole picture of you and your engagement beyond the classroom at MSU. Your resume is something you customize or shorten for certain employers or internships.
The Spartan Experience Record created through My Spartan Story is meant to enhance a resume, or to be used to help you evaluate your experiences in order to build a stronger resume by highlighting the value in these experiences.
Q: Who might want this information?
A: The first audience for this information is you. Learn from it, notice patterns about yourself. Tell your story.
Other interested parties will be some employers and some graduate schools, especially as you develop specialized skills and training, you can show your official Spartan Experience Record to support your stories.
Q: How do I talk about/discuss the experiences I have on My Spartan Story Spartan Experience Record or co-curricular record?
A: Learning to tell your stories is one of the most important parts of your learning journey at MSU. Practice telling your story makes you better when you really need it, like in an interview or at a critical pitch moment.
Q: I am involved in a co-curricular experience that I would like to have on my Spartan Experience Record. How do I add it?
A: Experiences in My Spartan Story must be submitted by an MSU faculty or staff member, and beginning the request process can occur in two ways: 1) connect directly to the advisor or supervisor of your experience to submit it for inclusion in My Spartan Story (you are welcome to be a part of this process). 2) Suggest your experience through the My Spartan Story form and we can reach out to your faculty/staff advisor/supervisor to encourage them to place the position and activity in the platform.
